The Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras is flashy but not pricey

Once again, Yongnuo is making a difference in the photography industry with another one of their photography products. The Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras is a great product that works very well, and is priced less than 1/5 the cost of the Canon macro twin flash. I own this twin flash, and while it is not completely equal to its Canon counterpart, it comes in at a very close 2nd place. It is well built, quite solid, and quite durable. Since these types of gear must always be handled with care, there is no weakness in build quality when compared to Canon’s twin flash.

This twin flash fully supports Canon’s E-TTL / E-TTL II system, and also allows for the usual manual control. Just like the Canon version, it has two flash heads that mount on the front of your lens. You can control the position of each flash head for optimal lighting of the subject. There is a LED autofocus assist light built in, and “users have access to both 1st and 2nd curtain sync”. The flash also has a PC sync port, and it can be powered by 4 AA batteries or an HV power pack. Included in the box are 4 adapter rings (52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 72mm), and a nice protective pouch good for storage and transporting.

If you would like to purchase the Yongnuo YN-24EX TTL Macro Flash for Canon Cameras, head over to Amazon or B&H Photo Video and pick one up for $171.

The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head aims to travel light

Getting back for a moment to the news stories about travel tripods, there is a new release coming soon to join the existing bunch of existing solutions. The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head (Lever Locks, Sony Alpha Edition), is a relatively compact travel tripod measuring 59.1 inches when fully extended, but just 15.7 inches when collapsed. This tripod was specifically designed for the Sony Alpha a7 and a9 cameras, but I do believe that since it is compatible with both RC2 and Arca-type systems, it is likely that it can be adapted to be used with other DSLR cameras with the correct Arca plate. Since it was designed specifically for Sony, it does feature matching graphics and a dedicated release plate.

The legs consist of four sections featuring OPL lever locks, and a side button gives you the versatility to set up the tripod at three different angles. The ball head that is included “offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use.” The tripod is constructed from an aluminum alloy, weighs only 3.6 pounds, and has a load capacity of 17.6 pounds.

The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head (Lever Locks, Sony Alpha Edition) will be available soon and can be currently pre-ordered from B&H Photo Video for $189.99.

The Manfrotto Pro Light Cinematic Backpack Balance can carry it all

So for this episode of “I am still desperately trying to find the right photography gear bag for myself”; I am focusing on a new bag just released by Manfrotto.

Although specifically designed to accommodate a fully set up Ronin M/MX, the Manfrotto Pro Light Cinematic Backpack Balance seems to be a bag that may also work well for my DSLR with the extended battery grip attached, and with either my Sigma 70-200mm or Canon 24-105mm attached. Of course I always walk with additional gear for both photo and video opportunities, so the additional space is great.

This bag is still relatively compact, and is touted to meet most aircraft carry-on requirements. Internally, it is lined with 3D shock absorbing foam and structural reinforcement board. The fabric is soft so that it will not scratch the gear. It is made of “water-repellent ripstop nylon/polyester, with hollowed ITW Nexus buckles and Duraflex hardware”. There are external accessory pockets to hold various accessories, including straps to carry a tripod or monopod. There is also a dedicated compartment for your laptop, and a sun/rain cover is included to “seal” the deal.

The Manfrotto Pro Light Cinematic Backpack Balance can be purchased from B&H Photo Video for $279.99.

The Octopus.Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head can really get down

Recently, I have been on a search for several types of photography and videography gear, and I have been focusing on a few specific types of gear. Monopods and tripods have been a major part of that focus. There are times when we have some very unique shooting requirements, and the standard tripod or monopod just will not handle the job. There are several manufacturers that make unique “mutations” for exactly those types of gigs.

The Octopus Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head, is a great example of this type of gear. It is a support system that sits flat on a surface, and creates a stable non-slip platform for mounting up to a 5 pound camera rig.

It also works well for mounting monitors, or sound recorders, or any other type of gear up to 5 pounds, that can be mounted on to its built-in ¼”-20 threaded mount. The base is made from Cordura and Neoprene, and it is filled with stainless steel shot balls to provide the weight necessary to make it stable. There is also a cable strap that you can use to further secure your equipment.

You can head over to B&H Photo Video and purchase one for $24.95.

The Olloclip Mobile Photography Box set is the lens accessory your iPhone X deserves

Olloclip was one of the first ever quick-connect lens systems for iPhone featuring fisheye, wide-angle and macro lenses. I owned the first version for the iPhone 4S. I really liked being able to attach different lenses to my iPhone. And I was able to take some really cool photos. Fast forward a few years to the all-new Mobile Photography Box Set for iPhone X. Like the iPhone’s camera, the Olloclip has changed and improved.

Using their new Connect X system (exclusive to the iPhone X) you can easily interchange lenses with just a snap. It unlocks with the push of a button and clips onto the iPhone X’s camera.

Choose from three premium multi-element coated glass lenses, Fisheye, Super-Wide, and my favorite the Macro 15x. The easy to use lens system intuitively aligns with both front and back lenses of your iPhone. This allows you to attach a lens to each simultaneously, which should definitely help up your selfie game. And the mount expands to work with nearly all screen protectors.

Unfortunately, the system doesn’t work if you have a case on your iPhone. However, you can purchase Olloclip’s own Slim Case for $30 if you want that extra protection.

The system even includes a Pendant stand that opens to create a pocket-sized tripod.

The Olloclip Mobile Photography Box Set for iPhone X is available on Amazon for $99.99.
