The MeFOTO GlobeTrotter Air Travel Tripod: Don’t leave home without it.

For those of us who pursue the adventures associated with photography and videography, traveling light is a must. We have to take so much gear in anticipation of what we might get the opportunity to shoot, that every little reduction counts.

One way to reduce weight and bulk is by using a compact lightweight tripod that can still get the job done by handling our regularly used equipment including full size DSLR cameras, etc.

The MeFOTO GlobeTrotter Air Travel Tripod is exactly such a tripod. It is sturdy and lightweight since it is made of aluminum alloy. It is capable of supporting up to 17.6 pounds and extending to 68.1 inches. “The telescoping 5-section HyperLock design allows the user to set-up and break-down the tripod with speed and ease by simply turning the rubber foot in one direction to extend the leg and in the opposite direction to lock it at the desired length”. It features an Arca type compatible ball head with an Arca type plate, and it can be adjusted to work as a monopod. The legs can be spread so that the tripod is lowered down to 12 inches, and folded closed it is so compact that it measures only 12.2 inches.

If you would like to purchase the MeFOTO GlobeTrotter Air Travel Tripod, you can head over to B&H Photo Video and purchase one for $159.00.

Feel free to connect with Freestream

Fashion shows are one of the events that I love to video, and on a few occasions, I have been a part of a team the included a live broadcast as a part of the event. The hustle and bustle of celebrity types lends a sense of excitement and adds energy to the environment. However, setting up multiple video cameras for these events can be a pain when broadcasting, because of the cables that need to be run from each camera back to the broadcast hub. This issue is even more complicated when we are forced to run cables across areas where models will be walking, since tripping is an inherent risk even when the cables are taped to the floor.

I have researched many wireless HDMI transmitter/receiver kits, but they have always been rather expensive, starting in the $1000S for one set.

Recently, I can across Freestream. It is an HDMI transmitter/receiver kit that claims to work with most HDMI enabled cameras. While we use SDI in most of our connections, we have the ability to use HDMI with no issues. Freestream features, an audio input to the transmitter, a removable and rechargeable battery, an LCD screen, 1080P 60 Hz frequency, a range of up to 1500 feet, and 4 channels that supports the use of up to 4 cameras simultaneously.

You can get more information on Freestream and pick one kit up with an included Pelican case for $699 at the Freestream website, or without the case for $599 at B&H Photo Video.

The B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Grip can handle the load

Within the photography industry, there are many companies that make similar products, making the choices that are right for you, very hard to make. Recently, I wrote a few news stories on photography gear belts, and I have continued to try out different makes and models for fit, finish, strength and efficiency.

The B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Grip is a very well made photography gear belt that includes a quick release system with a safety thumb lock, and an extension that is long enough and wide enough, to provide a stable support when you need to put the camera down, while it is still attached to the belt. The extension also has loop holes on the lower part so that it can be strapped around your leg creating even more stability. The quick release plate is stated to be strong enough to support your DSLR and even a small video camera, with a load capacity of a bit over 17lbs. This makes it very practical for most applications. One of the major differences with this belt is that the quick release plate and supporting structure are not made entirely of metal. B-Grip stands behind the product with a limited lifetime warranty.

If you would like to take a closer look at this belt you can do so at Amazon. It is available for purchase for $44.60.

The Axler Foldable Crane Slider has all the right moves

As I continue on my quest to find the most efficient and most portable slider that is also a great “bang for the buck”, I have been looking at the foldable Crane Slider from Axler.

The first feature that catches my attention is its small size and therefore portability. The next feature that is attractive is how it moves and maintains the subject in the frame, while managing steady and smooth straight slides and parabolic slides. All of the movement is performed by simply moving the rounded knob handle left or right.
The Crane Slider is designed for medium sized DSLR cameras, and mirrorless cameras, with the ability to support almost 5lbs. Once the slider is mounted to a tripod, it has a range of movement of 14 inches on each side for a total of 28 inches of movement. 1/4”-20 mounting screws are available for positioning the included aluminum ball head for both parabolic and linear movements. The bottom of the slider has a 3/8”-16 tripod mount threaded screw hole, so that it can be mounted directly to a tripod.

If you would like to learn more about this slider, you can head over to B&H Photo Video and check it out. It is available for purchase for $299.

The FocusShifter LensShifter will make your DSLR go VAROOM!

A couple of nights ago, I was shooting some macro photography and since I shoot in manual mode, I was operating both the zoom and focus rings manually. This has always been a bit clumsy for me to do, but for some reason it really bothered me that night.

Determined to find a solution, I embarked on my usual internet search, and I came across the FocusShifter LensShifter Red & Blue Kit. The kit consists of two simple looking plastic handles one red and one blue, with toothed neoprene belts for placing them around the lens rings, and a built-in mechanism to adjust the belts to fit any lens rings with an outer diameter from 56mm to 98mm. It also has a balancing counterweight on the opposite side of the handle to compensate for any looseness in the lens rings. This shifter allows you to easily adjust your focus or zoom in smooth and desired increments, and you can do so without the clumsiness of reaching around the front of the camera to grab the lens. It also works well for video scenes when you want to move a scene in or out of focus, or change the distance for a specific effect. In addition to the kit, the LensShifter is available as a single item for use with just one ring of your choice.

If you would like to purchase the FocusShifter LensShifter Red & Blue Kit, you can pick one up at Amazon or B&H Photo Video for around $45.
