Albedo100 makes sure you’ll always be seen at night

NEWS – Albedo is a measure of how reflective an object, usually a planet or moon, is – how much of the incident light is reflected by the object.  Despite how bright they are, the Earth’s albedo is only about 0.3, meaning 30% of light is reflected, and our moon when full is only about 0.5, or 50% of light reflected.  The permanent reflective spray from Albedo100 would seem to promise to greatly increase the reflectivity, and therefore the visibility at night.

Albedo100’s spray is a “permanent formula that dries a matte gray and can last up to three months, defying wind, rain, and UV rays.”  It’s intended for use on hard surfaces, and it works best on concrete, metal, stones, and wood.  Spray it directly on your bike frame, walking stick, sports equipment, shoes, or helmet to greatly increase your visibility and safety outdoors at night.

A can of Albedo100 permanent reflective spray is $18.95 at The Grommet.

SmartHalo multi-function bike accessory tracks fitness, provides navigation, and even serves as an alarm system

NEWS – The SmartHalo Connected Bike System performs a lot of functions in a small package.  It connects to your handlebars, much like those old-fashioned bells.  It’s only  0.8″ x 3.6″ x 2.4″, so it doesn’t interfere with using your bike.  That tiny package adds a lot of functionality without a lot of distractions.

Installation is easy.  You install the mounting base to the handlebars (fits standard handlebar diameters of 22.2, 25.4, and 31.8 mm), then use the HaloKey to secure the SmartHalo to the base.  You’ll only need to remove the SmartHalo when it needs a recharge (about every 3 weeks), or when you need to take it inside to protect it from extreme temperatures (below 14°) when the bike is not being ridden.

The SmartHalo system requires an app on your iPhone (4S and up, iOS 9 and up) or Android phone (equipped with BLE and Android 4.4 and up) and an internet connection.

When you start riding your bike, fitness tracking starts automatically without you needing to start or stop an app.  It also automatically starts navigation, using intuitive light signals to direct turn-by-turn navigation.  Its built-in headlight automatically turns on in blinking or steady mode while riding at night and off when the ride is done.    When you aren’t riding, SmartHalo functions as an audible alarm (over 105dB) to protect your bike from being stolen.

The SmartHalo Smart Connected Bike System is $149.00 from The Grommet.

Don’t settle for a utilitarian bike rack. Get one that looks as good as it performs!

NEWS – You need to carry more stuff for your bike commute than you can support on your back, so you need a rack for your bicycle.  While you need it to be strong and useful, you don’t want it to look clunky on your sleek bike.  Check out the Portland Design Works Everyday Rack.  It’s made of durable alloy tubing, may be mounted to a rear wheel skewer, and includes a tail light mounting point and solid, adjustable attachment arms.

The deck is made of double-ply bamboo; it measures 8.25″ x 3″.  The rack is 16.5″ tall.  It’s rated for 55 pounds of cargo.  PDW says: “The lower mounting bars allow panniers’ center of gravity to be closer in line with your wheel, improving rear-end stability even when hauling heavy loads. Additionally, it means the platform is easily utilized, even when riding with two panniers.”

The Everyday Rack is $99.00 at Portland Design Works.  You can also find it at Amazon for only $80.00.

Store your bicycle on the horns of a Longhorn

NEWS – The Longhorn Bicycle Rack is a whimsical piece of art for your walls when it’s not in use.  It’s a convenient rack to hang your bike out of the way when needed.  The Longhorn was created by Phillip Stone and is handmade in his Oregon workshop.  It’s crafted of Oregon fir, a vegan leather recycled bicycle seat, and aluminum road bike handlebars.  When hanging on the wall, the rack looks a bit like, and was inspired by, the head and horns of the Texas Longhorn cattle.

The rack mounts to the wall with two screws; be sure to screw it into a stud or use wall anchors.  It measures 12″ tall x 16″ wide x 9″ deep, and it can support a bike up to 65 pounds.  The Longhorn Bicycle Rack is $110.00 at UncommonGoods.
