JBL E55BT wireless over-ear headphones review

I am on a never ending search, a search to find the perfect set of headphones. I know for most folks that may be a simple proposition, just buy the best headphones on the market. But what qualifies as the best and besides as I have some other qualifications besides sound, I need to be able to travel and wear the headphones for long periods of time. My current top contenders are a set of Polk Hinge wireless Bluetooth headphones, they are pretty good, but they are an on the ear type headphone so they loose some long term comfort points. I now have a chance to review a set of JBL E55BT over the ear headphones. Let’s see if my Polks can be dethroned.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

For those who do not recognize the JBL name, they have been around since 1946 selling audio speakers for home and professional use. The JBL E55BT headphones are a newer offering in a long line of headphones. If I had to guess based upon their other headphone lines I would say the E55BT headphones are an upper-midrange offering from JBL.

The JBL E55BT headphones have the following specs as listed on the JBL website;

  • Dynamic driver: 50mm
  • Plug: 3.5mm
  • Frequency response: 20Hz – 20kHz
  • Impedance: 32Ω
  • Battery lifetime: 20hr
  • BT type: 4
  • Warranty: 1 Years

Besides, the E55BT headphones you also get the following:

  • Detachable cable
  • Charging cable
  • Warning card
  • Warranty card
  • Safety sheet

The top of the E55BT headphones has the JBL logo on it and is covered in cloth.

The right side ear cup has the JBL logo on it and is hinged to allow the headphones to be folded. The hinge mechanism also allows the headphones to rotate about 45 degrees to the rear for wear comfort as well as storage. Both sides of the E55BT headphones have the same hinge setup.

The left side of the JBL E55BT has the same JBL logo and hinge set up as the right side. Both the right and left side ear cups are made of a slick and textured plastic giving the headphones a good look.

The right side rear ear cup has the headphones controls. The first control is the on/off slider switch that also has a LED to let you know the headphones are on. Below the on/off slider switch you have the volume control that also acts as the pause/play, call answer and track forward and back rocker. The left ear cup has no controls.

On the bottom of the E55BT headphones have the headphone jack and Bluetooth connect button on the right ear cup and the charging port on the left. Charging is done via a standard USB to Micro USB cable. The front of the E55BT headphones have no buttons to give them a clean slick look.

The padding on the JBL E55BT ear cups is thick and comfortable. Inside each ear cup, there is a cloth liner with either “L” or “R” inside so you know how to put the headphones on.

The inside of the headband on the E55BT headphones are cloth covered like the top of the headband and have some padding on it.

So, what’s my bottom line here? The JBL E55BT headphones are some nice headphones. The sound is great, not overly bass-boosted. This allows me to listen to all my music from classical to punk and all in between. Form and fit are also to notch, if I have any complaints it would be that I think they could use a little thicker padding on the underside of the headband. The controls are well placed and it is nice that you can control all the music functions from one switch. To be honest, I did not test the 20 hour battery time (not in a row anyway) but I have gone about a week and a half between charges (a couple of hours a day use). Synching the headphones to my iPhone was easy and painless. The E55BT headphones are comfortable for extended use (long flights or bus rides) and they have enough volume to drown out the world. At a price of $149.99 on the JBL website and with five color options (black, blue, red, green, and white) The JBL E55BT headphones will fit just about anyone’s budget and fashion preferences.

Video doorbells, folding photography studios, and more – Notable crowdfunding campaigns

This week we have two Indiegogo campaigns and two Kickstarter campaigns. I want one of each! Click through to see this week’s list of notable crowdfunding campaigns.

Xchime Doorbell: Watch your home from your phone

What is it?
The Xchime Doorbell is a video doorbell with features not found in other video doorbells that are currently on the market.

Why do I like it?
I like the Xchime Doorbell because it includes additional features not found on other video doorbell systems like the Ring Smart Video Doorbell that I reviewed last year. The Xchime integrates with a smart light to automatically turn on when motion is activated. It can also integrate with a garage door opener.

Where can I find more info?
With a month left in the campaign, The Xchime Doorbell campaign has already met their funding goal of $25,000. You can pre-order an Xchime Doorbell starting at $129. After the Xchime Doorbell campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in August 2017. Visit their Indiegogo page for all the details.

Foldio3 photo studio

What is it?
The Foldio3 is Orangemonkie’s latest portable photography studio. I reviewed and regularly use their Foldio2 photo studio which is listed on my Julie’s favorite gear page.

Why do I like it?
I like the Foldio3 because it takes what I already love about the Foldio2 and makes it bigger and better. At 25″ wide, the Foldio3 is almost twice as large as the Foldio2 so that you can photograph larger objects. The LED light bars have also been updated to be brighter so that there are fewer shadows and they are now offering magnetic halo light bars that can add extra light inside the studio box. I’m very excited about this new larger studio and am looking forward to reviewing it.

Where can I find more info?
With 39 days left in the campaign, The Foldio3 campaign has already blasted past their funding goal of $50,000. You can pre-order a Foldio3 starting at $109. After the Foldio3 campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in September 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Hale Orb: A fun new way to share photos and videos

What is it?
The Hale Orb is a tennis-ball sized device that allows you to share and view your photos & videos on your TV.

Why do I like it?
I like the Hale Orb because it’s a more tactile/natural way to interact with your TV to view photos and videos that have been shared by family members and friends. The orb works like a remote that you can spin and tap. When new photos are uploaded, the device glows to alert family members that new media is available to view. Tapping the Hale Orb turns on the TV so you can see the new photos and videos.

Where can I find more info?
With a month left in the campaign, The Hale Orb campaign has already met their funding goal of $20,000. You can pre-order a Hale Orb starting at $139. After the Hale Orb campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in December 2017. Visit their Indiegogo page for all the details.

Zeki Smart Shorts

What is it?
Zeki shorts are men’s shorts with lots of pockets and a special pocket for a portable wireless charger for your smartphone.

Why do I like it?
I like Zeki shorts because pockets! There’s even a cooler pocket that can keep your drink cold. Bet it keeps your leg cold too!

I hope they succeed with their campaign and make a women’s version of these shorts.

Where can I find more info?
With 25 days left in the campaign, The Zeki shorts campaign has lot of work to do to reach their funding goal of $50,000. You can pre-order a pair of Zeki shorts starting at $39. After the Zeki shorts campaign ends, rewards are estimated to start shipping in July 2017. Visit their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Nexia HD Wi-Fi home security cameras review

There is no shortage of home security devices out there, and I have even reviewed an indoor camera here at the Gadgeteer that I liked a lot. But I needed an outdoor camera as well for an area outside my home that is somewhat hidden from view and could easily be used to break into my home. So I decided to give Nexia and their Wi-Fi HD home security cameras a try. I got their indoor camera (model WCP200NX) and outdoor camera (model WCO200NX) to see if they were worth protecting my home. So let me share with you what I found out.

First the specs from the manufacturer:

Outdoor camera (model WCO200NX):

Weight:               1.4 lbs
Dimensions:      1.4 x 3.3 x 4.8 inches
Batteries:           None, power connection required
Included:            Camera, Mounting Stand, 12v 1.5A Power Supply, Anchor Screws, USB to Ethernet Adapter
Warranty:          Limited, one-year
Resolution:        1080P (1920×1080, 16:9), 720P (1280×720, 16:9), High (640×480, 4:3)
Lens:                   Wide-angle 110 degrees
Price:                   $189

Indoor camera (model WCP200NX):

Weight:               12.8 oz
Dimensions:      2.8 x 3.3 x 4.2 inches
Batteries:           None, power connection required
Included:            Camera, 12v 0.5A Power Supply, USB to Ethernet Adapter
Warranty:          Limited, one-year
Resolution:        720P (1280×720, 16:9), High (640×480, 4:3), Low (320×240, 4:3)
Lens:                   Wide-angle 140 degrees
Price:                   $183

Setup and installation

This was pretty simple. You follow the directions that come in the box to download the free Nexia app and connect the camera to the www.mynexia.com website. After you are done with the initial setup, you can use either the Nexia app or the website to change the settings for the camera. I found the process simple and easy to follow.  You can also set them up to reverse the image if you mount the camera upside down, for example, from the eave on your house.

I got both an indoor and outdoor camera. The outdoor camera came with a mounting bracket that I didn’t use. I have a piece of furniture outside on the patio where I use it so I didn’t need to mount it. Keep in mind that the camera requires the included power supply, so if you want to mount it somewhere on your house you will need access to power from somewhere. The cable is only about 10 feet long, so that may be an issue in some situations.

outdoor camera

The indoor camera was easier for me because there were many places inside my house where I could put the camera on a piece of furniture next to a power outlet. In both cases, these cameras are not small enough to be hidden and are easily seen in any environment.

indoor camera

Smartphone app

The Nexia app is easy to use and intuitive. I have included a couple of screenshots here so you can see what it looks like. You can pin-protect the app so no one can see your cameras without entering the pin code, and all the settings for each camera can be altered here just like on the website. The Nexia line of products includes many home-automation products so this app is used for all of those if you decide to buy any.

Performance

In my experience, the performance of both cameras has been spotty.  My internet connection is about 12 MB/sec upload which may have something to do with the regular ‘buffering’ that I see when trying to view live video from my smartphone. Both cameras are within 25 ft of my wireless router and yet I still have buffering issues when trying to view the highest quality image. So in both cases, I had to switch the settings to a lower quality image to avoid the buffering. There are no guidelines included with the camera that state what the ideal network speed is, so I can’t speak to that.

One thing I really like is the night view, which uses the infrared lights on the camera to show you a great picture of the house at night.  That is definitely a plus with these cameras.

The outdoor camera has a motion detection feature and you can be notified on your phone when it detects something moving in front of the camera. My only problem with it is that in my testing with my family members by the time I loaded the app up to see the live stream from the camera, the person/dog that triggered the camera was already gone.

There is a service that you can purchase to have video stored in the Nexia cloud, but I do not pay for that. And even if I had that service, unlike my other security camera, the Nexia cloud service doesn’t record 24/7 video footage. It only records 4 minutes of video and then waits for another motion event. The cameras that I got had no internal storage, and no SD card slot, so the cloud storage would be my only option for recording video.

The final thing that I don’t like about these cameras is that they do not have a pan/tilt feature. So that means wherever you point them is what you get. The wide-angle lens definitely helps in that regard so I placed my cameras in the corners of rooms to get the wide view of the room. And on both of these cameras, you can pinch to zoom in the app to zoom into something you want a closer view of. That is neat.

Final thoughts

The ease of installation and the solid app that Nexia provides is great. I can see where if I had many of their products that the app would be great to be able to control everything. The price however for both of these cameras is very high. I got more camera with more features in my other security camera, for less price. I think that these cameras would be an option for someone who wants to simply be able to look at something live from their phone. But I don’t think that I am going to use them as a true security camera.

The new Nest Cam IQ gets a big boost in image quality and smarts

I’ve been using Nest home security cameras in my home for years. They’ve always been the leader in image quality and cloud DVR features and they have announced the new Nest Cam IQ indoor camera which adds some exciting updates that I can’t wait to try for myself.

First of all, the IQ has a 4K image sensor with HDR and what Nest is calling Supersite. The updated image sensor is important as the new Nest will be able to tell the difference between your spouse coming in the door and an intruder and will alert you either way.

The Nest Cam IQ also has an updated built-in microphone and speaker for 2-way conversations.

The IQ isn’t available just yet, but you can pre-order one for $299 and two for $498.

You’ll also need to purchase a Nest Aware subscription for the cloud DVR features. Nest Aware subscriptions are $10 or $30 a month with a discount when you pay for a year at a time.
