Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam review

I used to write video chat software a few years ago, so I’ve seen my share of webcams. When the chance came along to review the Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam I jumped at the opportunity to see how good the latest webcam from Logitech really is.

What is it?

The Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam is a full HD webcam with Full HD 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60fps and 30fps streaming capability. The C922 is optimum for recording, game streaming, or video conferencing – basically all of your webcam needs.

Hardware specs

Recording 1080p30fps, 720p60fps, 720p30fps
Lens and Sensor Type Full HD Glass Lens

Frame Rate (max) 720p60fps/1080p30fps
USB Protocol 2.0
Image Capture (4:3 SD) Yes
Image Capture (16:9 W) Yes
Video Capture (4:3 SD) Yes
Video Capture (16:3 9) Yes

What’s in the box?

  • C922 Pro Stream Webcam
  • Tripod
  • XSplit 3 month premium license
  • Setup Guide

Design and features

Having owned literally dozens of webcams over the years, I’ve seen webcams ranging from the absolute worst to some of the best. Up until now, I was using a webcam that I paid nearly $200 for about 10 years ago. I thought it was a great webcam (it was when I bought it). As soon as I plugged in the C922 and fired up a video window, I literally said “Oh wow!” out loud. The video was that good!

I do daily video conferences using Google Hangouts with my main client. They immediately noticed that my video was much sharper and had a better frame rate than before. One thing that I noticed right away was the excellent autofocus of the C922, gone are the days of trying to manually focus my webcam, which is very difficult because I sit more than an arm’s length away from it.

If you’re needing to take close-up video or pictures, this webcam can focus at about 1.5 inches from the lens! The auto focus worked very well for the most part, but I couldn’t get it to focus automatically on the tiny micro-SD card. It did however work very well with larger objects, which is what you would probably be using it for anyway.

Although the camera will work just by plugging it in with modern versions of Windows, you’ll want to download the settings program from the Logitech support pages if you want to adjust the settings which include brightness, contrast, autofocus, color intensity, and white balance. Autofocus and white balance also have an automatic setting (the default).

On Windows, the webcam uses the standard Windows driver, so it will pretty much function with anything that can access a camera through those standard drivers. I used it with Google Hangouts in Chrome and Firefox, OBS, and XSplit broadcaster. The C922 has H.264 capability which is an advanced compression technology that demands less network bandwidth.

The C922 works very well in low light, and the video automatically adjusts to accommodate flickering room lights or multiple computer screens. The screenshot below is lit with just a single browser window.

The integrated stand/base of the webcam is quite configurable. It has a standard 1/4-20 thread socket in the bottom for attaching it to a tripod and adjusts to fit monitors up to 2 inches deep. The tripod legs also pull out to double their length and making the footprint a 7″ triangle – plenty stable enough for any use. The base also is designed to just sit on a flat surface and has a rubberized surface to prevent sliding. It can easily fit on top of any modern monitor or laptop screen.

The settings program that can be installed is nothing to brag about. Ordinary users will find it easy to use and adequate. The settings used to be much more complex, but it feels like Logitech has designed it for basic users now. The first tab (Home) has settings for Standard and Widescreen, and anti-flicker control for 60hz and 50hz. The second tab (Advanced) has settings for brightness, contrast, autofocus, color intensity, and white balance.

The ChromaCam software is supposed to allow the replacement of your background, but on Windows 7 in Google Chrome it constantly crashed before I could evaluate it. When it crashed in Firefox it crashed the entire browser, and then repeated that each time the browser started because the page kept reloading automatically. Although it’s probably something particular to my computer, I’ve never seen a software based background replacement solution work very reliably.

The audio captured by the webcam was satisfactory. It wasn’t pro-grade audio, but no one expects that for a camera that costs less than what most pro-audio people spend on just their microphone.

What I like

  • Excellent video picture
  • Can record at 1080p30fps, 720p60fps, 720p30fps
  • Excellent  autofocus
  • LED’s indicating that it’s on
  • Excellent low light performance
  • H.264 streaming

What needs to be improved

  • Settings are limited, advanced users want more settings
  • ChromaCam software was not stable, crashed every time

Final thoughts

If you really want a webcam with a great picture, this is the webcam to get. This is currently the best Logitech HD Webcam, with only the 4K Pro Webcam model ($199) being better. I really wish I had bought one of these a long time ago.

Nintendo reveals Switch Online service details

Nintendo Switch Online

After months of conjecture based on a handful of details, Nintendo finally announced their full intentions with their upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service, launching in September of this year.

The service will allow continued access to multiplayer games as well as Save Data Cloud Backup (finally!) and access to a growing library of classic NES games with “added online play.”

The pricing for the plans start at $3.99 for 1 month with $7.99/3-month and $19.99/year options. Compared to other online subscriptions like Playstation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, both $59.99/year, it’s a fairly easy fee to swallow.

However, it does seem that Nintendo is going to stick with their smartphone app to connect players to in-game chat sessions. This heavy reliance on an external phone and app is baffling, but then again, online gaming isn’t really Nintendo’s forte. Hopefully, they can learn some lessons and adapt along the way.

You can read more about the upcoming service on Nintendo’s website.

ROCCAT Sova gaming lapboard review

One difficult thing about gaming is that it nearly always requires a dedicated desk with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It’s quite difficult to sit on a couch and play without moving your entire system and taking over the coffee table, which is annoying and time consuming. ROCCAT has been my go-to keyboard for a while now, and with their new Sova gaming lapboard, I was excited to try out playing games lazily from my bed.

What is it?

The ROCCAT Sova is a lap keyboard (lapboard) with a mouse pad built in. It has two USB ports to allow you to plug in your headset and mouse as well, with an extra long USB cord to plug it in to your computer.

Hardware specs

  • 275mm × 240mm replaceable mouse pad
  • Replaceable wrist rest and lap cushions
  • Easy-Shift[+]™ with 28-key EasyZone
  • 2 × USB 2.0 ports
  • ROCCAT® Talk™
  • Multimedia functions
  • 4m break-away cable
  • 512kB memory + 32-bit Arm IC
  • 1000Hz polling rate
  • Advanced anti-ghosting with N-key rollover
  • Membrane keys

What’s in the box?

In the box, you’ll find the Sova lapboard, mouse bungee clip, and instruction manual.

Design and features

So, I glanced through the instruction manual, ordered a longer HDMI cable, and plugged the Sova into the computer and TV. It worked flawlessly. Next, I plugged a mouse into the Sova and once again, it worked flawlessly. The only thing that I had a problem testing was a headset since I do not own a USB headset. The sound went to the TV just fine without me having to change any settings on the computer. I tried to get their Swarm app up and going, but whether it was user error or a bug in the software, I could not get it going. Google is telling me it is a software issue, so I hope an update comes out soon to fix this.

There are two versions of the ROCCAT Sova keyboard; membrane keys and mechanical keys. I was sent the membrane version, which is nice and quiet compared to my mechanical keyboard. The membrane keys were smooth, quiet, and I had no problem with pressing down multiple keys during my gaming. It felt like a mix between a regular keyboard and a laptop keyboard, so it took me a bit to get used to where the arrow keys were on the right side. It didn’t bother me that much, however. The one thing that did was the lack of a number pad since I do use that for at least one game.

The mouse pad is a hard mat that worked well. I usually play with a cloth mat, but I did not notice much of a difference at all. The size was plenty big enough for my style of gameplay, and should be fine for most people.

There is a mouse bungee clip for your mouse cable that can be attached to the Sova. It’s necessary, since you do not need much cord. There is also a channel in the back to feed your cord into to try to hide it away. I didn’t bother terribly much with the channel, but I definitely took advantage of the clip after the first time I tried it. It kept my mouse from sliding off, which it wanted to do if I let go of the mouse with the Sova on my lap.

On the bottom of the lapboard, there is padding for comfort, which also hides the release for removing the mouse pad and palm rest. ROCCAT plans to have these be interchangeable in the future. This also allows for the pads on the bottom to be replaced if need be. The pads themselves made the lapboard rest comfortably on my lap, and it did well at staying in one place.

So how well did it work overall? I enjoyed sitting on my bed and relaxing while playing Overwatch on the TV. The overall size of the mouse pad was just right. I would not have wanted that to be any smaller. While the size of the lapboard in general is quite large, it was comfortable to use. The plug and play aspect was great. I just needed to plug in the USB to my computer and it was ready to go.

What I like

  • Very quiet keyboard
  • Comfortable to sit on my lap
  • Nice for lazy gaming

What I dislike/could be improved

  • No number pad
  • Needs a streaming box or TV in the room with the PC

Final thoughts

While I think the idea of a lapboard is great, my current setup makes it pretty difficult to really utilize it well. Without a streaming box, you have to make sure your PC is in the same room as the TV. What I will use it for, however, is not to play on my TV, but use my monitors when playing casual games from my bed, which is close to the PC. So while it won’t get a lot of use, it will find its way out now and then when I am extra lazy. If you are looking at getting the ROCCAT Sova, check your home layout and figure out if it would work out. It would be a fun and nifty addition to your gaming if you have the setup for it.

Price: $149.99
Where to buy: You can purchase the ROCCAT Sova on ROCCAT’s website.

HyperX Cloud Revolver Gunmetal gaming headset review

Although not the most prominent of the sensory functions, hearing plays an important role in our lives. Those of us who enjoy music also enjoy it more with a high-quality audio delivery. Those old tunes from your teenage years can take you back to those days like nothing else can. Even more for us that enjoy ’80’s rock and roll. That made reviewing the HyperX Cloud Revolver Gunmetal gaming headset even more enjoyable.

What is it?

The HyperX Cloud Revolver Gunmetal gaming headset is a premium-grade headset that aims to meet the demands of both the PC or Console gamer. Utilizing 50mm directional drivers and a removable microphone, the Revolver series headsets deliver precise, crisp audio in a durable, high-quality package.

What’s in the box?

  • HyperX Cloud Revolver headset with fixed 3.5 ft cord.
  • Audio control box with 3.5mm plugs with 6.75 ft cord.
  • Detachable Microphone.

Design and features

The Cloud Revolver headset makes great use of design when it comes to the structure of the headset. The steel frame is a one-piece design that encompasses the speakers, making it difficult to break. One of the things that really caught my attention was how flexible the braided cord was, unlike some of the braided phone charging cords that I’ve had.

The headset features a self-adjusting headband, which I felt was a little too giving in its springiness, making the earpieces sit a little low on my head. That might not be an issue if you have a fair amount of hair on your head.

The earpieces are memory foam and remained comfortable for quite a few hours at a time. They also did not interfere with my glasses. The fairly closed-back design kept almost all sound from escaping, which comes in handy if you don’t want to annoy other people in the room.

The audio control box has a convenient sliding mute switch, volume wheel, and a clip to keep it in place. The cord connected to the control box plus the headset cord gives you over 10 ft of freedom of movement.

The headset is truly multi-platform compatible, operating on Windows, Mac, or gaming system, as well as being compatible with Teamspeak, Discord, Skype, Ventrilo, mumble, and Raidcall.

The removable microphone is a nice touch. It features a 3.5mm plug and bendable boom. I did a video conference call and the other person said I sounded great.

Nothing beats great headphones when it comes to gaming. The extra edge you get from being able to hear the little audio queues like someone walking up on you really is exciting. The immersive experience is so much better than just speakers. The noise-canceling microphone really helps, and other players said the audio sounded great.

What I like

  • Flexible cords
  • Full metal frame that encircles the earpieces
  • Detachable, flexible, noise-canceling microphone
  • Closed-back ear cups don’t allow much sound to escape and annoy other people
  • Ear pads work fine with glasses

What needs to be improved

  • The self-adjusting headband is a little to loose for my liking
  • The frame is hard mounted to the ear cups, which means any touching of the frame transmits quite a bit of sound through to your ears

Final thoughts

This headset not only sounds great but feels like it is rugged enough to last for many years. Whether gaming or just listening to audio, this headset provides a comfortable and precise audio experience.
