Observe an eclipse every day in your own home with the Eclipse Fixed Sconce

NEWS – I like uniquely designed home furnishings as well as sciencey stuff. The Eclipse Fixed Sconce is both – a unique sconce that looks like an eclipse! This beautiful sconce by Philippe Malouin is made of brass, aluminum, and glass and comes in black chrome, chrome, and polished brass colors. It has a non-dimmable 3.5 watt integrated LED (200 lumens/2700 Kelvin color temperature) and measures 6 in./16 cm H x 6 in./16 cm W x 5 in./12 cm D. But before you get all excited and pull out your wallet to order, you’ll want to know that it costs… wait-for-it… $1000 from Roll & Hill. Did I hear you gasp? Yep, me too (and I did not mistakenly add an extra zero there). It is indeed one thousand dollars. I guess innovative designs come at a hefty price. Perhaps there’s a DIY project here for those who aren’t made of money…

Color the world and earn $10K!

NEWS – Gadgeteers always have a critical eye for detail.  Do you have some time off this summer and are you looking to travel the US and Canada for free, and pocket a cool $10,000? Behr Paint Company, one of the largest manufacturers of paints, primers, decorative finishes, stains, and surface preparation products in the US, Canada, and Mexico markets is looking for someone with a critical eye for color this summer.

Behr is looking for one Color Explorer to travel across the United States and Canada this summer. You will seek inspiration from colorful places to create, and the even more fun part – name, real brand new Behr paint colors.  I’m thinking of things like “Pocket Protector White” and “Gadgeteer Gunmetal”, but the person chose will likely come up with much more colorful ideas.

The Behr Color Explorer will get the opportunity to kayak the glacial blues of Lake Louise in Banff, people-watch at a vibrant music festival, take in the bold exteriors of Charleston’s Rainbow Row and more. Flights, lodging, and experiences are all covered by Behr.

After the tour is over, the Behr Color Explorer will be tasked with developing and naming new paint colors with the brand’s Color Marketing team at their Orange County, California headquarters.

The expectations for the Explorer will be:

  • Traveling to colorful destinations across the United States and Canada
  • Capturing detailed field notes and photos of the color inspiration discovered at each stop
  • Sharing the color exploration journey on social media and the Colorfully, BEHR blog
  • Leveraging these findings to create and name beautiful new Behr Paint colors

Applicants ready for a colorful summer should visit behr.com/colorexplorer and tell Behr what color inspires them most and why, in 150 words or less, by May 15, 2019. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and a resident of the continental U.S. or Canada, with a valid passport. The selected Behr Color Explorer will be notified on or around May 23, 2019.

Got the itch and the eye?  Go for it!  I’m sure you will come up with something much better than “Owww! Whacked My Thumb Blue”.

Make an interesting collage of photos instantly for your wall using the Modular Magnet Frame System

NEWS – I see photos of expertly decorated walls using a collage of photos and would love to recreate such designs on my wall but I’m not sure how to go about it. Who’s with me? Well, the Modular Magnetic Frame System by Magnaframe is here to help us out albeit with tiny special sized frames. You buy a set of either four frames that accommodate classic 4″ x 6″ print size photos, six frames that accommodate Polaroids, or six frames that accommodate 4″ x 4″ Instagram print sizes.  One frame of the set is screwed into the wall and has an integrated leveler and the other frames connect magnetically to it in any configuration (each frame in a set has neodymium magnets embedded into the perimeter). If you don’t like the configuration or get tired of it, you can rearrange them instantly! You can continually build onto your collage with additional frame packages. Each of the Modular Magnetic Frame System sets comes in black or white and are available from the Grommet for $49.99 per set.

Star Wars Christmas – the saga continues…

NEWS – The Star Wars Christmas tree topper not enough for you?  How about a string of Lightsaber lights for the tree?  These lights are from the folks at ThinkGeek, so you know they’re officially-licensed Star Wars merchandise.

The Star Wars Lightsaber String Lights have 20 alternating 3.5″ red and green sabers illuminated by seed LEDs.  The string is 10 feet long, with an 18″ lead wire and 6″ spacing.  The strand of lights is powered by 3AA batteries, so you can use them on a tree, a wreath, or in a window, with no need for a nearby wall outlet.

And since Star Wars isn’t especially Christmas-y, then there’s no reason you can just keep them up all year!

Find the Star Wars Lightsaber String Lights at ThinkGeek for $20.99.
