This book is a planetarium, a decoder ring, a speaker, a perpetual calendar …

NEWS – This book is a pop-up book like I’ve never seen before.  Instead of pop-up pictures to illustrate a story, these pop-ups are tools.  The title, This Book is a Planetarium: And Other Extraordinary Pop-Up Contraptions, gives you a clue to one of the tools.

There’s a page that pops up into a dome that can project star patterns onto your wall.  Another page provides a perpetual calendar, and another is a working speaker for your mobile device.

There are a total of six pages with gadgets.  The other three are: a decoder ring, a spiralgraph, and a “musical instrument that produces sound when something physical vibrates the air surrounding it – whether that object is a string, vocal chords, or a speaker.” This Book is a Planetarium: And Other Extraordinary Pop-Up Contraptions is $33.79 at Amazon.

Read by the light of your light saber

ThinkGeek has come through with another Star Wars-themed product that’s as useful as it is cool.  This time they have a Star Wars Lightsaber Book Light.  The officially-licensed clip-on LED book light features a lightsaber hilt with one LED instead of a plasma blade and an 11″ flexible neck.  The hilt is 4″ long and a half-inch in diameter.

You can clip the base to a 3/4″ stack of papers or just clip it to the book’s back.  You’ll need to supply your own AAA battery.  To conserve that battery, the light will switch off automatically after 20 minutes.  Don’t worry, you’ll get a flashing warning before it cuts off and leaves you in the dark(side).

You can choose between Luke Skywalker’s or Darth Vader’s saber.  Each book light is on sale for $9.99; normal price is $14.99.  Order your Star Wars Lightsaber Book Light now from ThinkGeek.

Nookmark – for when a normal bookmark just won’t do

The Nookmark Bookmark is described as a reinvention of a traditional bookmark, but I’m not sure how they went from a piece of paper slipped between the pages of a book to this wooden triangular support.  The Nookmark “follows the shape of an open book”, and you lay an open book over the apex of the triangle to mark your place.

According to reviews on Amazon, this method prevents your book from getting something placed on it on the nightstand.  Another suggested use is to place the Nookmark on a coffee table to display an attractive book as part of the decor.

The Nookmark has an opening in the center that’s perfect for storing your reading glasses or a phone.  The stand is made of high-quality, rapidly-renewable bamboo with a clear coating.

For each Nookmark purchased, one dollar will be donated to United Through Reading, which connects military families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together.  You can purchase a Nookmark Bookmark for $38 at Amazon.

Pick up a trunkful of hardcover Harry Potter books in dust jackets designed for each house at Hogwarts

Juniper Books has designed a set of Harry Potter books with special book jacket designs created for each of the houses at Hogwarts.  The books in our image are for Gryffindor.  These books are based on the hardcover version issued by Scholastic Books.  Juniper says they “buy heirloom quality hardcover books from publishers we love and respect. For our jacketed sets, we design, print, and fold each cover by hand to ensure a beautiful set you will treasure forever. Our jackets should be thought of more as art prints than the typical jackets which come from publishers.”  Each set is then stored in a cardboard trunk that looks like something a Hogwarts student might use it to take their belongings to school.

Each set of seven books with their custom dust jackets and trunk is $275.00 plus about $20 shipping from Amazon.
