Xcentz xDynamo 5-port Charger review

REVIEW – How many of us look behind desks and dressers and nightstands and see a warty jumble of wall plugs? Your watch, phone, tablet, and earphones all want their own outlet and wall connector. Well, that’s the promise held out by the Xcentz xDynamo 5-port charger. I was sent one to test and I’m here with the inside story.

  • Size: 2.2×2.5×2.5 inches
  • Weight: 7.7 ounces

Design and features

The xDynamo is a white smooth rounded 2.5″ cube (Well, it’s only 2.” high, but let’s not quibble.) that sits on a surface with a rubberized base ring. There are 5 outlets for various flavors of USB: one 3A Max USB-C in the center, three “regular” 2.4 A USB-A ports, and one Quick Charge (QC) 3.0 Max smart charging port with a green insert. Each of the corner ports has a green LED lamp for when it’s connected to power, which helps you find it, but isn’t like the aircraft landing lights some chargers have. The clean, modern styling means it can sit in a CEO’s office, the front reception desk, or the mailroom. With the detachable power cord, it’s also easy to pack for those trips when you and your companion both need to charge phones, tablets, and power banks and there’s only 2 outlets to spare in the B&B.

It could also find it’s way to your family room, where kids do homework on iPads, parents charge their wireless TV headphones for after the kids are asleep, Mom’s updating her presentation for a sales meeting tomorrow on her iPad, and Dad’s checking the sports scores or the weather report for his cycle ride this weekend while topping up his phone. Plug it in and set it on a table next to chairs in a remote corner of your office. Toss some charging cables into a nearby drawer, and you’ve got the digital equivalent of a cup of water in the desert.

What I like

  • Covers all main types of USB charging
  • Not too big
  • No power supply box

What needs to be improved

  • Could have an AC plug on one side – jus’ sayin’

Final thoughts

One can never have too many chargers. This is possibly the most typed sentence in our work Slack channel, (other than “I want doughnuts!”) – “Does anyone have a charger I can borrow?” With this on your desk, the answer is always, “Sure.” I love that it only requires the cable, so you can leave the bulky individual chargers at home.

Choetech T535-S 5 Coil Wireless Charger Review

REVIEW – Ever since Apple decided to wander into the wireless charging club, I haven’t looked back to corded chargers. This time, I’m looking at a wireless charger with a whopping 5 coils, big enough for two phones at once.

What is it?

The Choetech T535-S is a wireless charging pad with 5 coils, and is fast-charge compatible (10W for certain Samsung phones, 7.5W for certain iPhones).

What’s in the box?

  • Charging pad
  • User manual
  • USB-C cable
  • Note: No charging “brick”.

Hardware specs

From the Choetech website:

【Powerful 5 Coils, 360°Charging】Built-in 5 coils provide a wider charging area to boost charging efficiency; no need to fumble with your smartphone for a better charging position.
【7.5W 10W 5W Charging】3 Charging mode meets all your needs, this iPhone x wireless charger provides 7.5W fast wireless charging for iPhone XS Xs Max XR iPhone X 8 8Plus, 10W for Samsung Galaxy Note 9 S9 S8 serious Note 8 and 5W for all qi enabled devices.
【Premium & Stylish Design】Designed with anti-slip PU leather surface, not only provides sleek and modern style but also prevents your smartphone from sliding. The anti-slip pads on the bottom help keep your pad in place.
【Lightweight, Portable Build】The wireless charging pad is almost the same size as iPhone X. It packs powerful yet features in one compact and sleek design that fits any space. It looks great and functions perfectly in any environment – from home to office to hotel room and anywhere else you care to name.
【Type-C Input】The dual wireless charging pad has Type-C input to support up to high-speed input for fast wireless charging.
【Heat Dissipation Design】To achieve good heat dissipation effect and avoid the intermittent charge, we design heat dissipation holes at the bottom to keep your phone cool while charging.
Compatible Devices (Partial List)
-Fast Charging(10W Max) Samsung S9, S9+, Note 9, Note 8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note 5.
-Fast Charging(7.5W Max) iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, iPhone 8, 8 Plus
-Standard Charging Samsung S6, S6 Edge, Nokia 9, Nexus 5/6 and more Qi-enabled devices.

Design and features

This is probably the biggest charging pad I’ve ever seen. Even with a case on, it is slightly taller and wider than my iPhone XS. I measured 170mm long by 80mm wide.
The bottom of the charger features four rubbery feet and some ventilation slots. The wired charging port is on the long side, and is USB-C. Don’t have a USB-C cable? No worries, Choetech supplies one.  I almost missed it, but there is an LED indicator that glows green when charging your device. It’s just bright enough so it’s not terribly distracting at night. I don’t know if it changes color when your phone is full, because Apple doesn’t support that feature yet.

Setup

Choetech does not supply a power supply. If you want to take advantage of the fast charging feature, you’ll need your own Quick Charge 3.0 compatible charger. A “normal” one works fine, albeit slower.

Performance

Works great charging one phone, or even two at a time! Here’s an iPhone XS (left) and the slightly smaller iPhone 8 (right). Both charging simultaneously.

What I like

  • Fairly low profile without too much branding
  • Big enough for two phones
  • USB-C cable included
  • Green LED isn’t super bright, keeping you awake at night.

What needs to be improved

  • No charging brick included.

Final thoughts

If you’ve got your own QC 3.0 charger, this is the wireless charger to get if you’d like to charge two phones at once.

Apple Airpad cancelled, Nomad offers alternative

NEWS – Apple has just announced that they are putting the final nail in the AirPad coffin. (Photo credit for above shot goes to The Verge.) Matthew Panzarino at TechCrunch has the dirty details: “After a delay of over a year since it was first announced in September of 2017, the AirPower charging mat has become something of a focal point for Apple’s recent habit of announcing envelope tickling products and not actually shipping them on time.” Sometimes, Physics wins over engineering hubris. So it goes.

So, what shall we do, if we want a single device that can handle the terrific trio of charging (iPhone, Apple Watch, and wireless AirPods)? Our friends at Nomad have an answer. Their Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Edition has three Qi-certified charging coils across the charging pad. (The photo below is a promo shot from Nomad’s product listing.) The pad itself can charge two iPhones or an iPhone and AirPods in a wireless Charging Case at the same time thanks to 7.5 watts of power across those coils, according to an iMore review.

Did you, like me, rush to buy the wireless AirPods, thinking that the AirPad was just over the horizon? Are you going to use a different wireless solution, or take advantage of Apple’s 14 day return policy and fall back to a wired charging pair and spend the extra $50 on a nice steak dinner? Let’s discuss the Nomad solution and any others in the comments. Maybe we can get some of these solutions into the hands of willing Gadgeteers to test and review.

moshi Symbus Q USB-C docking station with wireless charger review

REVIEW – Laptop + large monitor = a boost in productivity. But how do you connect your laptop to your monitor? When you have a 12inch MacBook like I do, you have to have a USB-C dock like the moshi Symbus Q USB-C docking station with wireless charger. Let’s check it out.

What is it?

The moshi Symbus Q USB-C docking station with wireless charger is a USB-C dock that has an HDMI port that supports 4K, 2 USB ports, an Ethernet port, and fast wireless charging.

Hardware specs

Qi-certified wireless charging – supports Apple 7.5 W and Samsung 9 W wireless fast charging
Charges through cases up to 5 mm thick
HDMI port for adding an external display (4K@30Hz, 1080p@60Hz)
Gigabit Ethernet port for wired data transfer up to 1000 Mbps
2 USB-A ports for connecting a keyboard, mouse, or hard drive with data transfer at rates up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 1)
High-speed USB port for charging your smartphone or tablet (2.1A)
Full USB PD function for fast-charging USB-C laptops (up to 60 W)

What’s in the box?

  • Symbus Q docking station
  • Power cord
  • AC adapter

Design and features

In the most basic sense, the moshi Symbus Q is a rectangular device with a 19.5 inch USB-C cable that comes out the back side.

The top of the dock has a woven cover with a geometric design that is made of raised rubber ridges that help to keep a device from sliding around when using the wireless charging feature.

The sides of the dock are made of what I think is brushed aluminum and the base is black plastic.

The front of the dock has a status LED on the left side that glows green while the dock is being used as an HDMI adapter between your laptop and a display. The status LED glows in red while throbs in green while the Qi wireless charging feature is being used and will blink red if you place a non-Qi compatible device on top.

The back of the moshi Symbus Q has an Ethernet port, a 4K HDMI port, and the power port.

To test the functionality of this docking station, I tested it with my 12-inch MacBook and BenQ monitor. If you are familiar with the 12 inch MacBook, you’ll know that it has only 1 port, a USB-C port. That’s it. So the Symbus Q offers a lot of functionality by plugging directly into the MacBook’s USB-C port. Then I connect an HDMI cable (not included) from the dock to the monitor.

I had no issues using HDMI connectivity with this dock and my MB. It worked great. The dock supports 4K so I also tested with a 4K monitor and had no issues there either.

The wireless charging feature worked fine as well. I currently only have one device that I could test this feature though… a Sony Xperia XZ2.

I also tested the USB ports on the front of the dock and they both worked as expected.

One thing that I didn’t test was the Ethernet port. I don’t use a wired network in my office, so I had no good way to test the functionality of that feature.

The features that I was able to test all performed flawlessly. However, I did discover one bummer…

The snazzy padded cover over the wireless charging surface is just stuck on the top with a ring of adhesive that isn’t sticking all that well as you can see from the image above.

What I like

  • 4K docking station with a built-in Qi charger
  • Attractive design

What needs to be improved

  • Padded top is attached with adhesive

Final thoughts

I like the features and the look of the moshi Symbus Q USB-C docking station but the problem with the padded cover not sticking securely in place is a little worrisome especially when you factor in the $164.95 price tag. I’d rather just buy their $59 USB-C hub and their $40 Otto wireless charging pad and save $65.

Bezalel Prelude Portable Wireless Charger review

REVIEW – The struggle to keep your phone battery is real, and while there are many portable power options out there, there are quite a few with wireless charging as an option. One of the more unique entries into this niche is Bezalel’s sleek Prelude wireless charger, a portable battery pack that sports a sticky surprise.

What is it?

The Prelude Wireless Charger is a small, portable battery pack that can be used to wirelessly charge Qi-enabled devices. It can also be used as a more conventional battery pack, charging nearly any device through a USB cable. Bezalel’s optional phone cases incorporate magnets that help to center the phone over the “sweet spot” on the wireless charging area.

The charger/case combo is handsome, at least.

What’s in the box?

  • Prelude Portable Wireless Charger 10W
  • USB Type-C Cable

Hardware specs

  • Qi Wireless Technology
  • 5.6 Ounces Weight
  • 12V / 1A Wireless Input (Voltage/Amps)
  • DC 5V / 9V, 12V ; 18W USB-C Input (Voltage/Amps)
  • DC 5V / 1A, 9V / 1.2A, 12V / 0.9A Wireless Output (Voltage/Amps)
  • 5V / 2A, 9V / 1.67A, 12V / 1.5A USB-C Output (Voltage/Amps)
  • 5000mAh Battery Capacity
  • 4.4″ x 2.6″ x 0.63″ Dimensions

Design and Features

This review will be split into two parts, since I received a phone case from Bezalel to test out along with the charger. It’s worth noting that this case is optional and does not affect the functionality of the charger, save for one minor detail which I’ll get into below.

The Case (mini-review)

I received a bonus phone case with my review unit. The case itself appears to be a rather basic black rubber phone case, but hides a secret: an array of magnets that helps the phone automatically center over the charging spot. The magnets aren’t strong enough to keep the charger attached to phone, but merely prevent it from sliding around and losing connection.

The cutouts are pretty spot-on, but the material is easy to scratch up.

Aside from this magnetic auto-centering capability, it’s a pretty basic phone case. It has a good fit, hard plastic/rubber matte finish, felt inside, and offers a decent degree of protection from drops and scratches. The finish on the back is pretty easily scratched, and the button covers on the side are rather hard to depress. It’s also worth noting that the speaker and charging openings on the bottom of the case had a sharp edge. I usually hold my phone with my pinky supporting the bottom, so the lip of those openings was resting uncomfortably against my finger.

These plastic lips are dang sharp.

Also worth mentioning, the charger is right-side-up with the USB port at the bottom of the device. This means that if you want to keep the charger on your nightstand or desk, the wire will dangle forward instead of neatly toward the back. Why not just turn it around and place the cable in the back? Well, the case’s magnets are oriented so that it centers only while the phone and the charger are both right side up. So every time I had the charger’s port pointed away from me, I had to turn my phone around so it would center correctly.

Outside of a few magnets, it’s a pretty standard case.

It’s a minor quibble, I know, because I feel like this charger is primarily made for portable use. I think the charger cable would be better situated at the “top.”

All in all, their custom case is decent, but it only marginally improves the functionality of the wireless charger.

The Charger

The Bezalel Prelude itself is a combination of a standard portable USB charger, a Qi-enabled wireless charger and supports charging while the unit itself is charging. It’s made for both 7.5W fast wireless charging for iPhones as well as 10W fast wireless charging for Android phones.

Here’ the “charging” side where you place your phone.

The construction itself is solid and extremely portable, about the size of a deck of cards made of smooth, black plastic. There aren’t any buttons on the charger, it’s activated by giving the device a little shake, illuminating a logo and battery life indicator.

And, boom, charging.

The battery capacity is 5,000mAh … for comparison, my iPhone XR battery is 2,942mAh. So the Prelude could charge my phone about 1 1/2 times, and, for the record, I noticed that I did get about this amount of juice out of the unit.

I appreciated the versatility of the Prelude. For instance, you can use it to: – charge your wireless device – charge any device over USB (provided you have the proper adapter, the Prelude only has a USB C port in it) – plug it in to a USB power source like an AC adapter or computer and keep it on your desk as a wireless charging mat

One of the most unique features is the micro-suction surface. Underneath a thin, magnetic cover lies a surface that sticks to very smooth surfaces, but not too porous surfaces like fingers or cloth. This is, of course, the same side that you would place against your phone to charge it wirelessly. So you can press this suction surface to the smooth glass back (or similarly-surfaced phone case) and the Prelude will remain in place. Sure, there is now a thick, awkward hump attached to your phone, but it can continue to be used while your phone’s battery is being charged.

Removing the magnetic cover reveals the sticky micro-suction surface.

Using it in this way makes the charger sort of feel like a temporary bulky charging case. But instead of a hard-to-remove case, with the Prelude it’s just one quick peel and your phone is back to its normal, thin self.

The suction surface sticks to most smooth materials and does a fair job of staying put.

Another interesting feature is the fact that the Prelude can be charged wirelessly by placing it “upside-down” (logo side down) on top of another wireless charging mat.

I mostly preferred to use the Prelude as a portable wireless charging mat, placing it on a desk or table and letting it trickle charge my phone while I streamed music to a Bluetooth speaker. Lately, I used it to keep my battery charged while running my Dungeons and Dragons app for a 5-hour session. Worked like a dream.

For the most part, it did everything I’d want from a portable battery, without the mess of extra cables.

What I like

  • super portable
  • micro-suction surface with cover sticks is clever
  • dual-functionality as a wired or wireless charger
  • charger can itself be charged wirelessly!

What needs to be improved

  • would prefer USB A port for better compatibility
  • charger attached to phone is awkward to hold
  • there are cheaper options that do most of what this does

Final thoughts

Outside of a couple of very minor annoyances, I found the Prelude wireless charger to be a solid solution for keeping your phone’s battery topped off, particularly because of the micro-suction surface that turns it into more of a temporary charging case. However, the price may be a bit much for what you’re getting. And I would give the phone case a pass unless you really like the idea of auto-centering magnets.

Price: $69.99 (plus $19.00 for the optional case)
Where to buy: You can pick up the Prelude Wireless Charger directly from Bezalel’s website.
