The WatchAir is another cord cutting option

NEWS – Over the past few months, I have written a few news stories and I have reviewed a few Over-The-Air antennas, streaming boxes, and streaming boxes that work with OTA antennas. All of these devices are attempts by various companies to enable consumers to cut the cord to what has become an expensive cable TV service. The OTA antennas that function as standalone devices “pull in” all of the channels that are being broadcasted over the air within the range of the antenna. The number of channels and the quality of service depend on the quality of the antenna, where you live, and your proximity to the signals. Click here for a detailed article on OTA antennas, including making the choice and expectations.

I have been quite intrigued by many of the available options, and in a couple of instances, been quite angered by the policies of some of the companies that sell these devices. These questionable companies insinuate amazing results, but their devices offer no actual execution of performance. In addition, the companies do not stand by or support their product, and they do not offer customer service once the device leaves their warehouse. However, it is important to note that overall, most of my experiences with these types of devices have been positive.

Today I became aware of another such device called WatchAir. I looked at some videos about the device, and I must say that I am quite intrigued, and I am hoping that I get the opportunity to test and review one and compare it to the several other similar devices that I own. I like the design and look of the WatchAir which is very streamlined and sleek, and the fact that as an OTA antenna it functions independently and does not require an attachment to your TV is great. All it requires it the use of its app, and a wireless connection to your network. Once connected, you can access all of the available OTA channels via the WatchAir app on any Android or IOS device, including phones, tablets, and streaming boxes like Roku, Apple TV, etc. It has 7 GB of built-in storage and can take a micro SD card up to 2 TB. The manufacturer also claims that this antenna has a 60-mile range. This storage supports its recording feature. While I do see some negative reviews online, I am unable to form an initial opinion, since many of them seem to be based on the lack of user knowledge or less than proper execution.

The WatchAir is available for purchase on Amazon for $69.00.

Canvaspop PhotoBooks review

REVIEW – When I’m not writing code, my primary hobby is photography. I’ve never created a photo book, so when the chance to review the Canvaspop Photo Books product came along, I jumped right at the opportunity.

What is it?

The Canvaspop Photo Books is an iOS app that you use to create a 6″x6″ photo book in either softcover or hardcover.

Design and features

The Canvaspop Photo Books app is a pretty simple app. You start by selecting either the softcover or hardcover product. Next, you select between 20 and 30 photos, and then a cover photo.

You can tap and hold a photo to drag and switch it with another photo or tap a photo to either crop it or replace it with another photo.

When I initially started to add photos, I noticed that if a photo was added to your phone album after you start the app the list of photos in the app did not refresh, so make sure you have all your photos on your device before you start. There is also an option to add photos from your Instagram account.

You can also apply a filter at this point to all of the photos, available filters are: Natural, Black and White, Vivid.

After arranging your photos, tapping “Done” takes you to the checkout where you can set your quantity and start the checkout process. Both Apple Pay and credit cards are accepted. The rest of the checkout was pretty standard and my book arrived in about two weeks.

The photo book arrived in pretty minimal packaging but was in perfect condition. Overall I’m really happy with both the quality of the book materials and the actual printing and color.

The cover has an almost flat finish, whereas the pages have a slightly glossy appearance which I found to be perfect.

The app does not have any ability to add any text to any of the pages or covers, so you’ll want to edit an image with such information if you wish to have that included in your book. There’s also no ability to span an image across two pages, so if you want that you’ll have to create two images and add them to each facing page.

I did find that there was quite a bit of dust/crumbs in the book, probably from the trimming process, however that wiped of fairly easily.

What I like

  • Color accuracy was perfect.
  • Quality printing and binding.

What needs to be improved

  • App needs the ability to add text (title) and copyright information.
  • App needs the ability to save the book layout so you can finish or reprint it later.
  • No Android app is available yet.
  • There’s no ability to span an image across two pages.

Final thoughts

I am extremely pleased with the photo book, and the shortcomings of the app aren’t too big of a deal since if you know about them you can work around most of them.

Brava’s Smart Oven cooks your food ultra quick with pure light

The days of nuking your food in a microwave are numbered if the Smart Oven from Brava takes off. The Smart Oven is a small table top cooking appliance that uses panels of infrared lights to cook food twice as fast as a conventional oven at the press of a button and without any preheating because it can heat to 500°F in under a second. The Brava Smart Oven is best at cooking meats and vegetables with no fat needed and at the same time without overcooking or undercooking either one. And guess what? It can even make toast!

This oven has a ton of tech features that are designed to make your meals turn out perfect every time. It has a built-in temperature probe so there’s no worry of overcooking your steak and it even has a built-in camera that lets you see the food inside the oven as it cooks. It uses the camera to make sure the food is cooked perfectly by comparing live images to a neural network of other images to look at the coloration and texture on the surface of the food. The Brava Smart Oven is available for pre-order starting at $995. Visit Brava for more info.

Solo New York Draft backpack review

REVIEW – The backpack market is littered with bags that look good, can carry a laptop/Tablet, and have pockets for phones and water bottles. Solo makes a good many models, some of which we’ve shown here at the Gadgeteer. I have been using this latest one, the Draft, for a month or so, and am ready to give you my report.

Note: Photos may be tapped or clicked for a larger image.

What is it?

A three-pocket bag for daily carry, the Draft throws a lot into the mix with internal organization, including padded laptop pocket, tablet sleeve, and space for several pens, business cards or headphones. A raincoat, umbrella, or jacket can easily fit rolled into the main space alongside your other items.

Specs

  • (from the website)
  • Fully padded 15.6″ laptop compartment
  • Internal iPad®/tablet pocket
  • Multiple front pockets
  • Mesh side pockets
  • Internal organizer section
  • Padded back and backpack straps for added comfort
  • Sports zipper pulls
  • Smooth nylon fabric
  • Ultra-lightweight

What’s in the box?

  • Just the pack

Design and features

The Draft is a slim urban backpack for daily carry. Nothing about it screams “expensive” or “tourist.” The vertical zipper is nicely recessed so that there is a bit of fabric included in the pocket beyond what pokes out into the interior. The horizontal pocket at the base has even more room, with actual extra fabric included to make it bump out from the main body of the bag. You can’t fit a jacket or biking helmet into this, but it is plenty of room for a small tripod, an extra lens, or, as I do, your bag of meds and personal care items.

I like the t-bar zipper pulls. They let you grip the zips fully, whether you have gloves on or not. They also look pretty neat.

The two net drink pockets on each corner are perfect for a can or bottle, but can also hold your AirPod charger, your small camera, or a flash unit for your main camera. That stretchy net stuff is really adaptive. I have almost decided this would be the One Bag for me, but then, I got a couple of others from Julie the other day, so we’ll have to see if I come back or stay with the new units.

What I Like

  • Slim, yet roomy design
  • Front pockets actually have dimension
  • Pockets for full-sized laptop and full-sized tablet

What needs to be improved

  • Can’t find any real faults

Final thoughts

In the end, the choice of a backpack is extremely personal, so we can’t choose for you. But if you’re looking for something that will let you commute with the bare minimum, plus a few things like chargers, a jacket, or a nice set of headphones, you’ll want to at least check this one out. At $50, it’s not a bad choice to have in your closet.
