Give Mom the gift of Gold Cup Standard-brewed coffee for Mother’s Day

Not just every coffee maker can boast being certified by the SCA and ECBC for coffee brewing standards, but all MoccaMaster brewers from Technivorm can.  These coffee brewers have been handmade and individually tested in the Netherlands since 1968.  The Moccamaster 59162 KBG has a “unique, copper boiling element that rapidly heats water to control brewing temperature between 196 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit, which is important for coffee soluble extraction, then automatically switches off when the water reservoir is empty.”

The 9-hole spray arm is designed to completely wet out the coffee grounds for even extraction. Ten cups of coffee can be brewed in 6 minutes, and you can even momentarily stop brewing to get a cup when you just can’t wait for that caffeine fix.  The 40-ounce carafe sits on a hot plate that holds your brewed coffee at 175-185 degrees F for up to 100 minutes before turning itself off.

The KBG is made of durable metal housings and BPA/BPS/BPF and phthalate-free plastics.  The carafe is glass, so it won’t add anything to the taste of your coffee.  It measures 14″ tall x 12.75″ wide x 6.5″ deep.  This model, made for USA usage, is 120V 1475W.

Technivorm Moccamaster brewers are available at many retailers in the USA, including Williams-Sonoma, Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart, and Sur la Table, but Amazon offers the 59162 KBG in 18 colors, so you’re sure to find the perfect color to compliment Mom’s kitchen.  These models are offered from $329-349, depending on the color.  Find them now at Amazon.

Moleskine rolls out Transformers Limited Edition Notebooks

We’re big fans of Moleskine here at The Gadgeteer (check out our many past reviews of their products), and as a child of the 80s, I’m a HUGE fans of the original “The Transformers: Robots in Disguise” animated series from the latter half of that glorious decade. Moleskine has released two notebooks bearing the classic likenesses of Optimus Prime, heroic commander of the Autobots, and Megatron, evil leader of the Decepticons, both from a race of sentient robots with the power to disguise themselves as vehicles and other objects who battle to protect and rule the earth, respectively. Both are hardcover ruled notebooks in Large size format (8.25 x 5 inches) and priced at $24.95 each. Speed over to Moleskine.com or Amazon for more info or to order.

Class up how you serve boxed wine

Wine snobbery aside, there’s nothing wrong with boxed wine, but you have to admit those boxes aren’t the classiest items to grace your party buffet.  These shiny, wood-grain spheres can hold up to 3 liters of wine, and they look much nicer than any cardboard box.  The Wine Dispensing Sphere can be used with the plastic bag from the box, or you can use the included 3-liter plastic bag for your own wine.  There’s also a gel pack to keep the wine chilled.

The Wine Dispensing Sphere is made of wood-grained plastic.  It measures 8″ in diameter by 9″ tall and holds 101.44 fluid ounces.  The Dispensing Sphere is $65, and a set of two replacement bags is $8.00.  Purchase at UncommonGoods.

The Octopus.Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head can really get down

Recently, I have been on a search for several types of photography and videography gear, and I have been focusing on a few specific types of gear. Monopods and tripods have been a major part of that focus. There are times when we have some very unique shooting requirements, and the standard tripod or monopod just will not handle the job. There are several manufacturers that make unique “mutations” for exactly those types of gigs.

The Octopus Camera OctoPad Universal Weighted Support Base with Removable Ball-Joint Head, is a great example of this type of gear. It is a support system that sits flat on a surface, and creates a stable non-slip platform for mounting up to a 5 pound camera rig.

It also works well for mounting monitors, or sound recorders, or any other type of gear up to 5 pounds, that can be mounted on to its built-in ¼”-20 threaded mount. The base is made from Cordura and Neoprene, and it is filled with stainless steel shot balls to provide the weight necessary to make it stable. There is also a cable strap that you can use to further secure your equipment.

You can head over to B&H Photo Video and purchase one for $24.95.
